New Report Identifies Most Troublesome Private Lenders to Students

 

Albuquerque – Thousands of American students are using the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) public Consumer Complaints Database to settle disputes about private student loans, according to a new report from the NMPIRG Education Fund.

Sallie Mae, the student lending giant, generated the most private student loan complaints in New Mexico, and ranked first in every other state. Student loan borrowers in the U.S. carry $24,803 on average in total student loan debt.

New Mexicans have cut their per-person driving miles by 10 percent since 2007, while the nation’s long term driving boom appears to have ended, according to a new report from the NMPIRG Education Fund.

Survey Finds Dangerous Toys on Store Shelves

This morning NMPIRG, joined by Congresswoman Elect Michelle Lujan Grisham, released the report. It reveals the results of laboratory testing on toys for lead, cadmium and phthalates, all of which have been proven to have serious adverse health impacts on the development of young children. The survey also found small toys that pose a choking hazard, extremely loud toys that threaten children’s hearing, and toy magnets that can cause serious injury.

Ag Subsidies Pay for 21 Twinkies per Taxpayer, But Only Half of an Apple Apiece

Federal subsidies for commodity crops are subsidizing junk food additives like high fructose corn syrup, enough to pay for 21 Twinkies per taxpayer every year, according to NMPIRG’s new report, Apples to Twinkies 2012. Meanwhile, limited subsidies for fresh fruits and vegetables would buy one half of an apple per taxpayer.

Release of New Report: Loopholes for Sale

A new report released Wednesday, March 21 by U.S. PIRG and Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) found that thirty unusually aggressive tax dodging corporations have made campaign contributions to 524 (98 percent) sitting members of Congress, and disproportionately to the leadership of both parties and to key committee members. The report, Loopholes for Sale: Campaign Contributions by Corporate Tax Dodgers, examines campaign contributions made by a total of 280 profitable Fortune 500 companies in 2006, 2008, 2010 and to date in 2012.
